A Behavior Analyst’s Guide to Ethical, Effective Sleep Treatment
Sleep is one of the most powerful and overlooked variables in behavior support.
For many autistic learners and children with developmental disabilities, sleep problems affect attention, learning, emotional regulation, caregiver follow-through, and the overall success of intervention. Yet most behavior analysts receive little to no formal training in sleep assessment or treatment.
In Ready Set Sleep, Emily Varon gives behavior analysts the framework they’ve been missing. Drawing on years of specialized clinical practice, she shows behavior analysts how to understand sleep through a behavior-analytic lens; assess the variables disrupting healthy sleep; and design individualized, sustainable sleep treatment that families can actually implement.
Through real clinical examples and comprehensive case studies, Varon demonstrates how better sleep can transform not only evenings but daytime behavior, learning, and quality of life.
This is not a one-size-fits-all sleep-training manual. It is a practical, compassionate guide for behavior analysts who want to expand their expertise, stay within scope, and bring one of the most under-addressed treatment areas in applied behavior analysis into clearer clinical focus.
A practical, behavior-based guide for behavior analysts to assess, treat, and improve sleep ethically, while helping families, strengthening outcomes, and expanding clinical impact.
