Power, Values, and Inclusion in Leadership

Part 5 of the Shaping Ethical Change Series

Instructors: Georgiana Koyama, BCBA; Tyra P. Sellers, PhD, BCBA-D

Abstract

Georgiana Koyama and Dr. Tyra Sellers will examine how our interactions, policies, and cultural norms shape the way  we engage with others in professional and personal settings. Recognizing these influences allows us to create environments that support diversity, respect, and collaboration. Inclusive values are shaped by our personal and professional interactions and form the ongoing principles that shape how we interact with others in our environment. One important area where our values matter is in leadership roles where power dynamics affect the way leaders interact with their direct reports. Moving from power-over to power-with, -within, and -to helps us share power with those we lead and build relationships that are based on respect and support as opposed to coercion. Through real-world applications and reflection, you will gain practical tools to actively contribute to more inclusive spaces in your personal and professional life.
